— Overview

Rebuilt in 1977, Dongmen Market boasted the very first escalator in Hsinchu, serving as the city's most popular landmark and hotspot at the time. The artwork explores this history through the theme "Dongmen Neon Hello," utilizing design to translate historical narratives into a contemporary time and space shared with modern travelers. This approach opens up new possibilities for the old market landmark, bridging its past and future.

"Dongmen Neon Hello" features an intersecting visual installation of Taiwan’s unique signboard culture and traditional market symbols, capturing a miniature reflection of grassroots lifestyle and market vendors. By pairing a darkened space with an abundance of neon lights, the installation creates a deliberate sense of time disruption. It also echoes youthful vitality and a bustling nightlife. As the shifting colors of light interweave, they mirror the changing atmosphere of the market from dawn to dusk. Acting like words written directly into the space, the piece allows travelers to immerse themselves in the rhythm and cadence of light, feeling as though they have stepped into a hazy dreamscape of time travel that highlights the cultural evolution of old and new Taiwanese style.
